The trials and tribulations of metadata continue. The 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals has considered the question of whether the federal government may continue collecting metadata from nearly every phone call made, and has left the decision to Congress. This interesting information was found on Deseret News in their article, “Future of NSA’s ‘metadata’ collecting lies squarely at Congress’ feet.”

The United States is a nation governed by laws, not by men. Those laws are passed by representatives of the people. My point isn’t to give you a high school government class refresher, but it is important to remember that laws cannot be ignored, regardless of who is involved. There is no doubt that whatever Congress decides to do, the public must be involved in the debate. Metadata is not the enemy.
