This year’s Taxonomy Boot Camp is scheduled for November 14-15, 2016 in Washington D.C. If you have already registered then you are likely looking forward to a full agenda loaded with knowledgeable experts to assist you in the world of taxonomies. If you haven’t registered yet and are still trying to decide whether it is worth your time, read on.
The program and speaker line-up is rich with topics that you can apply in your day to day professional life. For example, Zachary Wahl is the founder and President of Enterprise Knowledge, LLC. He is an expert and frequent speaker on the topics of taxonomy design, knowledge management, and information governance. At this event he is facilitating Zen and Taxonomy Communication on Tuesday, November 15th.
Wahl recently spoke about what he perceives as some of today’s greatest taxonomy challenges: “Though the industry has come a long way, taxonomy design is still a commonly misunderstood concept.”
Wahl sees as the biggest challenge the fact that the individuals in the organization are often not aligned on what a taxonomy is, why they need it, and what they’ll get from a well-designed and vetted taxonomy.
“To combat this challenge, we lead off all our initiatives with a set of taxonomy primers that allow our project owners and stakeholders to learn common taxonomy terms and get on the same page regarding the value of taxonomy. We also run taxonomy design workshops at the outset of our engagements,” said Wahl. “This has the dual value of further educating and aligning participants while also collecting invaluable design requirements, starter taxonomy terms, and overall priorities regarding the taxonomy itself.”
