A solid taxonomy is the foundation of content system that wants to make findability easy and thorough. Metadata and taxonomy work together for the best results. This information came to us from Video Ink in their article, “A Publisher’s Guide to the Best Video Taxonomy.”
Metadata has become one of the most important components of content management. Working with a standards-based taxonomy helps make content findable – even video content.
Algorithmically-centered platforms and sites like Netflix or Pandora have embraced the power of metadata. Of course, this takes resources. By employing a team of dozens of people who apply tens of thousands of tags and descriptions to videos, they are able to generate accurate recommendations on a fairly granular scale.
Smaller organizations might not have the resources or needs to employ hundreds of people to apply and manage their metadata, but the model is scalable and therefore useable by many.
