Information professionals are learning that having a data classification process in place can make your data smart enough to know what to do with itself. This is exceptionally helpful when it comes to storage. Tech Target brought us this interesting information in their article, “Classification of data can solve your data storage problems.”

Data classification is about more than just storage. Remember information lifecycle management (ILM)? It endeavored to bring order to data disarray, but it didn’t take long for ILM to be defeated when it came to storage. Hierarchical storage management (HSM) was the methodology for data classification and management. However, it too had struggles with capacity demands, processing requirements, and data protection.

Some think that human classification of data is fraught with potential problems. Even if the process is automated, is your storage smart enough?
