In light of the new functionality that has been added to Access Innovations’ Machine Aided Indexer (M.A.I.®) software, the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) took the opportunity to work with Access Innovations to update and refresh the machine aided indexing rule base for their taxonomy that was originally implemented 10 years ago.

In the years since the IEEE originally set up their rule base, research and technology offered by Access Innovations in their Data Harmony Software have improved dramatically, which prompted IEEE to update their rule base. M.A.I. now has an increased capacity to handle large rule bases as well as much larger complex rules. The updated M.A.I. technology includes user interface upgrades that enhance functionality with customizable font color and style, color coded rule building, scroll sizing for better display, and error log reporting fixes. While only about 20% of terms in a taxonomy need complex rules, “wrappers” dramatically increase accuracy by reducing false hits. Four different SKOS exports have also been added to M.A.I. to cater to variations in customer data. Updated concepts, new fields of research, and expanded relevant fields with updated research and information were also incorporated. Overall, these upgrades allow for more comprehensive and accurate search results and an indexing accuracy above 92%.

“We use the Data Harmony products in a fully automated mode to process all of the IEEE content and tag automatically,” stated Adam Philippidis, Senior Manager of Information Analysis and Publication Digital Assets of IEEE. “The thesaurus is integral to the IEEE production flow and it makes it easy for us to maintain and monitor the accuracy level of all materials ingested to the IEEE. Along with the other automated products available from Access Innovations, we are able to process a great deal of material and meet our high IEEE indexing standards.”

“With all the new enhanced options for rule building and processing of text automatically to IEEE’s requirements, Access Innovations was happy to provide a full refresh of the IEEE rule base,” said President and founder of Access Innovations, Marjorie Hlava. “The work we did will enable their users to better find the resources they need to do their jobs.”
