The word semantic refers to meaning in language. Semantic technology leverages artificial intelligence (AI) to simulate how people understand language and process information. AI developing an understanding of semantics is the next step in its evolution. This topic came to us from Information Age in their article, “AI and understanding semantics — the next stage in the evolution of NLP is close.”

Where does natural language processing (NLP) fit into this cycle? It’s not an easy task teaching machines to understand how we communicate. However, the NLP market is expected to reach $22.3B by 2025– which illustrates how far the technology has come, particularly in how we communicate and do business. But there are still challenges.

The rules that dictate the passing of information using natural languages are not easy for computers to understand. Some of these rules can be high-leveled and abstract; for example, when someone uses a sarcastic remark to pass information.
