In today’s rapidly changing world, artificial intelligence (AI) is a commonly used terminology that is not always clearly understood. As AI applications are being rapidly adopted it is important to understand what that means, who is using it and to what end. Is data the newest commodity in demand? This interesting topic came to us from Fox 13 out of Florida in their article, “USF professor on artificial intelligence: ‘Data is the new oil‘.”

AI is any kind of technology that can recognize faces, help doctors diagnose diseases, and recognize a gun on surveillance cameras and automatically call the police. It is fast and comprehensive, and in great demand. For security, especially national security, many see it as valuable as crude oil has been on the global marketplace.

There are potential uses on the battlefield that include drones that can identify targets and evade threats. The Pentagon has spent billions of dollars into AI to help fight future wars and defend the United States from enemies who develop, and possibly steal AI.
