In the world of technology there are many terms used in conjunction with artificial intelligence (AI). That is because AI is an umbrella and much terminology exists underneath it. Machine learning, natural language processing, computer vision, and deep learning to name a few. This interesting topic came to us from The Enterprisers Project in their article, “How to explain deep learning in plain English.”
Compounding this issue even more, some AI terms overlap. Let’s start with what some see as the new kid on the block. Deep learning is related to – but not interchangeable with – the broader category of machine learning. Deep learning sits inside of machine learning, which sits inside of AI.
Deep learning is essentially a branch of AI that closely tries to mimic how the human brain works. The term deep learning refers to the neural networks having many layers that enable learning.
The real benefit of deep learning is that it improves itself over time, and there’s not a visible ceiling limiting that improvement.
