Supercomputing feels like a term from decades ago, but it is a form of high-performance computing that determines or calculates using a powerful computer, a supercomputer, reducing overall time to solution. Originally, most supercomputers were based on mainframes but their cost and complexity were significant barriers to entry for many institutions.
Because supercomputers are often used to run artificial intelligence-based (AI) programs, supercomputing has become synonymous with AI. This use is because AI programs require high-performance computing that supercomputers offer.
High performance computing most generally refers to the practice of aggregating computing power in a way that delivers much higher performance than one could get out of a typical desktop computer or workstation in order to solve large problems in science, engineering or business.
Big data doesn’t necessarily need to be that big, it is just when it reaches that point when it becomes unmanageable for an organization. When you can’t get out of it what you want, then it becomes too big for you.
