Creativity and science aren’t always linked together. However, creative ideas likely result from searching and combining semantic memory knowledge. The mechanisms acting on memory to yield creative ideas are still unclear. This interesting information came to us from Communications Biology in their article, “An investigation of the cognitive and neural correlates of semantic memory search related to creative ability.”

Investigations of the information processing mechanisms that underlie imaginative thought typically focus on a single branch of imagination, such as prospection, mental imagery or creativity, and are often generalized as being insightful to understanding the workings of imagination in general. In reality, however, there is very little in the way of theoretical or empirical exchange between the scientific communities that conduct research within the different domains of imagination.

A selected subset of information content and semantic similarity measures could support the development of technologies for computer-assisted enhancements of human creativity or for the implementation of creativity in machines endowed with general artificial intelligence (AI).
