Sometimes you want to call in professional help for data hoarders. If you’ve ever walked into a hoarder’s home, you were likely met by endless piles of seemingly worthless things. To the owner, though, these items are invaluable. It can be similar when you look at an organization’s collection of data. Venture Beat brought this interesting information to our attention in their article, “Eliminate the data packrat mentality.”

Millions of companies are hoarding old and unnecessary data. And the data they’re hoarding could be putting their organizations at risk, increasing storage costs and contaminating their analytics. 

There is not a 12-step program to stop hoarding data, but there are ways to get it under control. And it starts with discovering all of it. This may sound basic but all data of any type, in any language, in the data center or the cloud, must be acknowledged – you can’t protect what you don’t know you have.
