Forward thinking companies are leveraging virtual experiences to do more than entertain. They are customizing products, training new users, and enhancing the quality of lives. The Scholarly Kitchen brought this interesting news to our attention in their article, “Start-up Stories: Mindscape Commons — or, How VR is Helping Develop Medical Students’ Communication Skills.”

Virtual reality (VR) uses software and hardware to immerse a user in a digital environment. They get to explore and interact with virtual surroundings and potentially, via robotics, with a corresponding physical environment.

The healthcare industry has been a big adopter of VR technology. It helps their professionals train and prepare for real-world scenarios, such as surgery. Teams can plan out complicated procedures and even diagnose and treat computer-generated patients.

At the end of 2021, over 6 million virtual reality headsets were sold, bringing the cumulative total to 16.44 million in play. As more headsets become available and more affordable, this number will only grow.
