Many are concerned that ChatGPT may eliminate careers in data science. While generative artificial intelligence (AI) has the potential to automate certain aspects of data analysis and data generation, it is unlikely to replace data scientists entirely. Analytics Insight brought this interesting topic to our attention in their article, “Will Data Scientists Soon Become Obsolete Due to ChatGPT?

Data scientists are responsible for defining and solving complex business problems using data-driven approaches. While generative AI can assist with specific tasks like data generation or imputation, it cannot replace the human intuition and creativity required to formulate and approach intricate problems.

Data scientists are skilled in interpreting results, understanding the implications of findings, and providing actionable insights to stakeholders. Generative AI may produce outputs, but human data scientists are needed to make sense of those outputs, especially in complex and ambiguous situations.

On the other side of the coin, generative AI can be a valuable tool in the data scientist’s toolkit, automating repetitive tasks and accelerating certain aspects of the data analysis process. It can free up time for data scientists to focus on higher-level tasks, such as formulating business problems, interpreting results, and providing strategic insights. Collaboration between data scientists and generative AI is likely to lead to more efficient and effective data analysis and decision-making processes.
