The IBM Blue Gene/Q machine is currently number one in energy-efficient flops, but a new FPGA-like technology brought to market by semiconductor start-up eASIC is providing an even greener computing solution. And one HPC project in Japan, known as GRAPE, is using the chips to power its newest supercomputer.

Metadata Technology North America has announced that it is working with the Institute of Child Health (ICH) in the United Kingdom on the development of tools to prepare, publish, and maintain data management plans aligned with the DMP Online recommendations. These tools will leverage the Data Documentation Initiative (DDI) metadata specification and the ISO 27001 security standards to capture the necessary information.

Emory sociologist Roberto Franzosi has collected more than 1,200 newspaper clips about lynchings in Georgia from 1875 to 1930. He is applying a research methodology and software program he developed to catalog and analyze the narrative data. Franzosi’s Georgia Lynching Project is one of the first four projects of the new Digital Scholarship Commons (DiSC), which helps faculty and graduate students harness digital tools and resources.

In this new edition, a semantic layer is featured and eliminates the need to write SQL queries or perform data extractions. Information Management brought this news to our attention in their article, “Birst Releases Visualization Edition.” A semantic layer is in the appliance links tables and generates queries “under the covers” for non-SQL experts.
