Difference is Appreciated
My mother is full of musings and witticisms. I should start my own blog just listing them but hence, no time. However, one of her favorite sayings especially when I was in my teen years and wanting everything everyone else had, was "imagine how boring this world would be if we were all the same?" Now in my forty-something years I see the wisdom and truth in those words. I admire uniqueness and sometimes stubbornness in others and myself. I don't want to be like everyone else. I like being the unique being that is me.
Learn More About Thesauri
The Association for Information Management (ASLIB) is offering a course on Thesaurus Basics. It is a distance learning platform and is scheduled for October 15, 2014. This course introduces the ideas behind the thesaurus, the most sophisticated gold-standard controlled vocabulary for information organization and retrieval. It enables participants to understand what thesauri are, why and how they are used, and why they are worth the intellectual effort needed to construct and maintain them.

Abusing the Thesaurus
A new twist in using technology to take shortcuts lands in universities, where students are using a thesaurus app to procure changes on essays copy-and-pasted from the internet. Their belief is that it no longer falls under plagiarism after they make a few changes. However, the results are often hilariously inept.
Bob Kasenchak to Facilitate Taxonomy Boot Camp Workshop
As we announced yesterday, our own Margie Hlava was named winner of the 2014 ASIS&T Award of Merit. Because she will be in Seattle on November 4th to receive this award, Bob Kladkfa;ceck will be leading the workshop "So You Have a Taxonomy - Now What?" in her place.
