The venerable Getty Art and Architecture Thesaurus (AAT) has just been released in a Linked Open Data format. The Getty AAT was developed starting in the late 1970s for the art library and art journal indexing community. Since then it has undergone periodic revisions, and is well regarded in the controlled vocabulary community.

Many factors pose hurdles of varying degrees: asset ingestion, building the database, relevant and descriptive metadata, to name a few. For those comic book geeks...err...collectors in the audience Marvel Entertainment's new API allows you to build Marvel Comic apps for your own use. That last part was important. You can't market them for revenue. The Disney-owned company is opening up the data from its 75-year publishing history, including cover art, characters and comic book crossover events, for developers. This "free for all" gives them access to metadata for more than 30,000 comics and 7,000 series.

The American Society for Indexing is hosting a webinar titled - Creating Name Authority Files for Large Indexing Projects. Leading the event is Linda Dunn from Dunn Information Organization. Linda has been a periodical indexer for over thirty years and has been interested in authority files since she began indexing. When you use a thesaurus for indexing context covering multiple disciplines, the need for disambiguation of terms is increased. This fact of thesaurus life was well illustrated in a presentation at this year’s DHUG (Data Harmony Users Group) meeting. The presentation, by Rachel Drysdale, Taxonomy Manager of the Public Library of Science (PLOS), was titled “The PLOS Thesaurus: the first year.”
