Contribution Recognition and Authorship

Our world is information changing. Big data needs big teams to create and then communicate the results. In the olden days someone would do an experiment, find some interesting results to share, write it up, send to a journal and two years later after peer review copy editing, typesetting (later photo composition), printing, binding, and mailing it would arrive at their colleagues desk. But today the team writes up a big proposal get funding, finds 3000 staff members to work on the experiments, gather the data and publish or otherwise communicate the results. In the first example it was easy to say who the author was, they may have acknowledged others and thanked them for their support. Now there are many roles in research and attribution is complex. I am sure you have noticed how long the credits in the movie theater are now. Will we be moving to a similar model?

However, I recently learned that this reliance on computers extends to scan resumes for key words using “proprietary algorithms”, “advanced semantic search”, “computational linguistics”, and “statistical inference.”

As technology advances and social media becomes even more prevalent in our day-to-day lives, where does that leave email? There are many people I know who say they don’t use stand alone email for anything. They rely completely on Facebook to communicate with friends, family and business associates. Personally, I do find myself having more conversations on the social media guru’s site than using my personal email account. The relationships are different and therefore the communication is different. So in the battle of social vs. email, who will win? And what will be the results of that win?

A new application has been released that can serve as your own personal video librarian. Move Explorer by Anlarke scans the files and adds data from both IMDb and MOVIEmeter. With titles, descriptions, artwork, and even user ratings, this makes a very manageable library for the movie buff.
