Project Underway to Create Metadata Framework For Tagging Resources

The Learning Resource Metadata Initiative (LRMI) is a project to create a common vocabulary for describing learning resources on the Internet. The technical working group has been formed and includes representatives from experts in the fields of education, publishing, and metadata. Their goal is to create a metadata framework for tagging resources that is can be easily implemented, but rich enough to assign valuable attributes to educational content to make searching and filtering easier.

Overpaying/Underpaying – It Always Costs

The Office of Inspector General has estimated that Medicare contractors nationwide overpaid physicians roughly $28.8 million combined in 2008 and 2009 for incorrectly coded services. This news makes it a little easier to understand the need for a new medical coding system.

Digital Book Library Might Be In Our Future

Amazon is apparently in talks to launch a digital-books library run on the same premise as Netflix. For an annual fee, readers can read themselves silly on e-books of their choosing. There are no details available as to how advanced this process has moved, but it does make us wonder about the impact on brick and mortar libraries.

New Management Team at Sprylogics

Sprylogics has a new Chief Executive Officer after Michael Frank stepped down as Chief Executive Officer and Director of the Company in order to pursue other interests. Marvin Igelman has accepted the role. Two additional members have been added to the management team - Brad Marks and Bhavuk Kaul have joined as the VP of Product Development and VP of Product Marketing, respectively.

Natural Language Processing Only Goes So Far

The sirens call of natural language processing has been issued again. In this study, the researchers compared the use for free text searches to administrative codes to see which would give better indication of safety based on 20 indicators. The authors rightly suggest that instead of relying only on the notoriously poor check boxes used with discharge orders that the hand written notes form the discharge nurse or physician might be much more instructive.
