Metadata is fast becoming a household term, with the news constantly using it alongside the NSA scandal and inflaming news, conspiracy theories, and the like. But does the average person understand what metadata is, what it can and can’t do? Most of all, do they understand the importance of big data? ZDNet brought this interesting topic to our attention in their article, “Does anyone really understand big data?”

Republic Polytechnic has implemented a new records management system in order to capture and allow easy retrieval of institutional knowledge. This interesting information was found on FutureGov.com in their article, “Polytechnic in Singapore rolls out records management system.” The records management system, called eDocs, was released in November last year and has accumulated close to 300,000 records.

Relational databases are the normal choice for most organizations to store their structured data. In the big data era, though, these types of databases don’t cut it anymore. Although they made a huge difference in the database world and have unlocked data for many applications, relational databases miss some important characteristics for the big data era.
