January 26, 2011 – With semantic technology relying so heavily on social media and especially, Facebook, there is concern that if Facebook goes away will it take Web 3.0 with it?

We found this interesting discussion on Inventors Spot in their article, “Would Social Media’s Bubble Burst If Facebook Were To Cash Out?” Douglas Rushkoff, author and CNN correspondent, posted this question and voiced his belief that indeed it will in a report he titles, “Facebook hype will fade.” Pointing to AOL as an example of rise and fall, he believes social networks are transitory; a fad.

Semantic technology has been personified in Facebook’s “Like” buttons, and though many, including the author of the article, believe that social media will evolve, not go away, it is easy to see the power that Facebook wields. What do you think?
