April 19, 2011 – Members of the IPTC will address semantic markup and introduce attendees to rNews at the Semantic Web Meetup scheduled for Thursday, April 21st at the New York Times Building.
Obviously, The New York Times brought this event to our attention in their post, “Semantic Web Meetup: Learn About rNews.” If you are in or near New York City this week, this free event sounds like an interesting way to spending your evening.
The IPTC is a consortium of the world’s major news agencies, news publishers and news industry vendors. It develops and maintains technical standards for improved news exchange that are used by virtually every major news organization in the world. The IPTC’s latest standard is now rNews.

Data Harmony’s NewsIndexer vocabulary is a parallel to IPTC news topics. NewsIndexer maps all IPTC topics to its substantially larger topic collection, held in Thesaurus Master. Changes in IPTC, such as rNews, should and will prompt similar changes in term mapping. The partner tool, M.A.I., can categorize content using IPTC terms or NewsIndexer terms. Thanks for the alert!
