ICD-10: An unvited guest?
Neil Stanley, regional president of corporate partnerships at Harrison College in Indiana, recently discussed in a podcast their comprehensive International Classification of Disease Tenth Revision (ICD-10) training curriculum. It is designed to equip physicians, coders and other medical staff with the tools necessary to make the transition to ICD-1o as smooth and successful as possible. The deadline for the transition is October 1, 2014 and there is much work left to do to be prepared.

CMS Critic brought this news to our attention in their article, “New Alfresco Faceted Search by Ixxus Delivers Enhanced Enterprise Content Search.” This new addition will assist Alfresco in fulfilling the ‘Smart Search’ requirements of its 2012 Product Road Map. Other benefits will include enhanced functionality and discoverability using metadata-driven, faceted searching. The new faceted search will greatly improve the discoverability of content and search results.

A new platform will aggregate digital resources from libraries and museums across the United States. This library platform will not host any resources, but will provide open access to metadata about them. Last time, we mentioned biological taxonomy. This leads us inevitably to Carl Linnaeus (1707-1778), a Swedish zoologist and botanist. We regard him as the “father of modern taxonomy.” Contrary to popular belief, Linnaeus did not invent the binomial nomenclature system, with organism types designated by genus and species. That honor belongs to the Bauhin brothers, Gaspar (1560-1624) and Johann (1541-1613). The two Swiss brothers formalized the then-existing method of (often vague and wordy) polynomial nomenclature, introducing a stricter, more logical system with one word for the genus and one for the species.

ou have no idea how excited I am to share this latest find with you. Ironically, it came on the same day that I found a vintage pocket handbook of synonyms and antonyms at a local thrift store. It was the best $1.99 I have spent in a long time. My shopping companion found it humorous that I was so excited to find something that “the Internet could provide.” Tsk, tsk, tsk, my naïve little friend. Google will never give me the pleasure of turning yellowed pages full of antiquated words like a vintage book.
