Monster Uses Semantic Technology To Improve Connectivity
The familiar job opportunity site, Monster, recently announced that the company’s 6Sense® semantic search technology which is behind Power Resume Search™, is now available in the Netherlands. This means recruiters in seven countries can now quickly and precisely find and target candidates who best meet their hiring needs.
The team at Monster worked on the 6Sense knowledge base for over two years prior to launch of the beta phase, which included extensive testing and feedback from a variety of clients and searches.

That was made even clearer to me when I found this article about a small county courthouse indexing their documents into digital archives for safety in lieu of disasters or identity fraud. Of course we are all for digitizing content for ease in findability as well, but when I realized this article, which I found on Google News, was about a small town just a few miles from my hometown. Human beings supposedly produce 2.5 quintillion bytes of data every day, according to IBM. Adding to that bit of trivia, 90 percent of the data in the world today was created in the past two years. The result is why we have the challenge of “big data” today. Enormous data sets that most relational database management systems (Oracle, IBM, Microsoft, etc.) find difficult to process. “Ontologies for Information Integration” (OI2), an April 18 workshop at the University at Buffalo, will address this challenge and offer some non-traditional solutions.

To understand the history of classification systems, it behooves us to explore the history of thinking about knowledge. So what is knowledge? The Greek philosopher Plato defined it as “justified true belief”. However, the twentieth-century writer Bertrand Russell commented that “at first sight it might be thought that knowledge might be defined as belief which is in agreement with the facts. The trouble is that no one knows what a belief is, no one knows what a fact is, and no one knows what sort of agreement between them would make a belief true.”
