Is it really naïve to think two complimentary domains can be described by taxonomies and then mapped? Authors Robert L. Glass and Iris Vessey, in a recent Viewpoints column in IEEE Software published by the IEEE Computer Society, titled, “Naïveté Squared: In Search of Two Taxonomies and a Mapping Between Them” concluded they were naïve. The authors have long thought, there needs to be “a taxonomy of application domains; a taxonomy of solution approaches; and a mapping between the two.” They feel they were naïve because, despite promoting the need for several decades, it hasn’t happened. Or so they think.
I am sure most physicians didn’t decide to go to medical school because they liked technology. Granted and especially recently, younger medical students are entering the field already assimilated to using technology in every aspect of their life so applying it in their daily professional life is no stretch. However, with the many advances in semantic technology and now the shift to ICD 10 coding, which will require more specific coding for reimbursements, physicians can no longer hide in the clinic and let the office manager fend for their selves.

In-Q-Tel is the CIA’s investment group and they are backing NetBase, developer of semantic search technology, and Connectify, developer of VPN software.
