Metadata, whistleblowers, and secrets, oh my. With all the chatter about NSA and Edward Snowden, people seem even more afraid that their phones are being tapped and emails read. Now personally, I think if someone was listening to my phone calls and reading my emails, they must be bored out of their living mind. Whatever your personal convictions are on the matter, it has certainly hijacked the stream of information around metadata – valuable metadata.

Elsevier and the Dryad Digital Repository have implemented two-way linking between their respective content. This means scientific and medical research datasets stored by Dryad for research articles published in 28 Elsevier journals can now be immediately accessed at Dryad from their online article on ScienceDirect and vice versa.

OCLC Research scientist, Brian Lavoie, and Richard Gartner from King’s College London, have co-authored the second edition of Preservation Metadata. This edition focuses on new developments in preservation metadata made possible by the emergence of PREMIS as a de facto international standard.

Backupify provides cloud-to-cloud backup and recovery solutions for Software as a Service (SaaS) applications. They are expanding their services to support backup for Salesforce.com metadata using Backupify for Salesforce.

Colectica has released their latest enhancement to the data documentation software – Colectica 4.1. Their software is based on open standards metadata from the Data Documentation Initiative and builds on previous versions. This interesting news was brought to our attention on Digital Journal in their article, “Colectica Unveils New Version of Data Documentation Software Using Open Standards Metadata.”

So much talk and news has been around metadata. It has practically become a four letter word. MIT’s Media Lab has developed a new tool – Immersion – to help individuals understand how much personal information their ‘metadata’ reveals about them.
