Galaxy clusters can be some of the most massive structures in the cosmos, but despite being millions of light years across, they can still be difficult to spot. Some researchers at Lancaster University have turned to artificial intelligence (AI) for assistance. Science Daily brought this interesting information to us in their article, “Deep-CEE: The AI deep learning tool helping astronomers explore deep space.”

Most galaxies in the universe exist in low-density environments known as “the field,” or in small groups, like the one that contains our Milky Way and Andromeda. Galaxy clusters are rarer, but they represent the most extreme environments in which galaxies can exist. Studying them can help us better understand dark matter and dark energy. Deep-CEE” (Deep Learning for Galaxy Cluster Extraction and Evaluation), is a deep learning technique to speed up the process of finding them.

By automating the discovery process, scientists can now scan sets of images faster than ever before and return precise predictions with minimal human interaction.
